Use of language is great, it flows beautifully and very enjoyable. There are some surprises in the book for good measure. Humor made me laugh, depth of characters made me feel for their sorrow and triumphs and felt that this book will give reader an emotional ride while telling a story spanning thousands of years. This book had me hooked from the start, and it is one of those book which will entice you to take the long route home hoping for more traffic. These are pretty big names and this book has elements from all these books in it. One of the last battles reminded me of a combat from 'First Law Series'. ASOIAF for the back stabbing / political intrigue and share number of characters getting chopped off. It has shades of LOTR (Remember, you shall not pass!). It has everything one could look for in epic fantasy. Most definitely a 5* rating from me, and this is a series I will be rereading for sure. This book is the best in the series. And instead of the triumph one feels after reading such a beast, I was just sad it was over. Even though it is over 900 pages, I read it in three sittings (which for me at least is very fast). It is all you could ever ask for really.īut seriously, how can I write anything that can do this book justice. It is fast, it is action packed, it is tense, it is emotional, it is fun. And not only is this setting awesome, the expedition team is also compiled of all of our favourite characters from throughout the series. A large part of the story in this book is set underground, and had a strong ‘Mines of Moria’ feeling, in a Very good way. The plot is put together very cleverly and all the puzzle pieces set up from the start fall into place. You really grow to love them, if you did not do so yet. All of them have grown throughout the series, and have developed into interesting and unique characters. We follow Royce and Hadrian, but also Modina and Arista play important roles in the story. Just as in the previous books, the characters are great. Sullivan has done a great job of creating a good and solid foundation with the previous books in the series, allowing him to finish it off with a big and epic punch. Some of these deaths are predictable, others come as a surprise. ĭamn this book… I cried, So Much! There are quite a few characters that die. Feel free to check out my reviews for those: Theft of Swords (#1 -2) and Rise of Empire (#3 – 4).

Note: this review may contain spoilers for the previous books in the series. But they didn’t account for Royce and Hadrian finally locating the Heir of Novron-or the pair’s desire to wreak havoc on the New Empire’s carefully crafted scheme.
